What a home costs to run

Most household running costs come down to one number: the price of a kWh. The electricity cost calculator turns your usage, unit rate and standing charge into a daily, monthly and yearly bill. The appliance running cost calculator shows where that money goes — a tumble dryer or plug-in heater usually dwarfs the fridge and TV combined.

The same kWh price decides what it costs to charge an electric car: the EV charging cost calculator compares home, overnight and public charging against petrol. The heating cost calculator puts gas, oil and a heat pump side by side, and the solar panel calculator works out how many of those kWh your roof could supply, and how long the panels take to pay back.

What a home project costs

Project quotes vary widely because the quantities are rarely worked out the same way twice. The paint calculator, tile calculator and flooring calculator start from measurements, add the wastage a real job needs, and price materials and labour separately so you can see which half of a quote is out of line.

For a whole room, the room renovation cost calculator combines decorating and flooring across budget, mid and premium finishes. For the biggest single job most houses need, the roofing cost calculator works from footprint and pitch, and our guide to new roof cost in the UK explains why quotes for the same house can differ by thousands.

Common questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

For a 65kWh battery, a full charge is about £5.50 on an overnight EV tariff, around £17 on a standard price-cap tariff and about £52 on a public rapid charger.

How much does a tumble dryer cost to run?

A 2.5kW vented or condenser dryer uses roughly 4kWh a load, so about £1 a load at the price-cap rate. A heat pump dryer uses around half that.

Are the calculators UK-specific?

They default to UK prices, such as the Ofgem price cap and UK market rates, and can switch to US or EU figures. Every rate can be overwritten with your own.

How accurate are the estimates?

They are planning figures, not quotes. Each shows its source and review date, and splits materials from labour so you can compare it against real quotes line by line.
